THE DIFFERENCE

The #1 question we always hear: "So what makes you guys different from the others?"

The short answer – Our patents!

Our Process
2019-10-08 Patent #10,436,894
2017-06-13 Patent #9,678,206

What do these patents cover?

What they do – We developed an algorithm that analyzes several elements of a storm cell including:

Vertically Integrated Liquid (VIL)
VIL Density (VILD)
Enhanced Echo Tops (EET)
Spatial Offset (Z differential)
Probability Of Severe Hail (POSH)
Hail Index Maximum Size (NHI)
Ground Truth (spotter reports)
Lowest radar level (.5 degrees)

From these ‘products” of the Doppler Radar(s), our algorithm calculates the DHI (Derived Hail Instentity) “Intensity” and the result is used in our maps, reports and API services.

We didn’t seek our patents to boast, but rather to demonstrate our commitment to complete transparency. This way, virtually anyone can simply go online and look up our patents and see EXACTLY what we do and how.

Many of the “other guys” will only say their processes are “trade secrets” or “proprietary” or even best of all: “trust us…we are the best”

Why is INTENSITY such a big deal?

Early in the development of the HailStrike tool, it was clear the entire industry was relying on reporting the “size” of hail. The challenge with this, is that there is an incredible variance from location to location. Often times, the ‘Size of Hail’ is usually the ‘BIGGEST’ piece of hail. This has proven to be a very weak indicator of potential damage. While there may have been (for example) 2″ MAXIMUM hail…if only a few hailstones were that size, there may have been thousands of others that were much smaller incapable of causing damage to property.
